How to Convert a Citi Statement to Excel
Whether you need a year of Citi card spending for a budget, a checking history for a loan application, or clean rows for your bookkeeping, the statement PDF is where the data lives. This guide shows how to turn a Citi PDF statement into Excel (or CSV, JSON or XML), where to find the PDF, and what a Citi statement's layout means for the converted file.
The quick way
- Download your Citi statement as a PDF (where to find it is below).
- Upload it to statementconvert.ai: drag and drop the PDF.
- Preview the extracted transactions and check whether the result agreed with the balances printed on the statement.
- Download as Excel, CSV, JSON or XML.
No account is needed to preview: without one, the preview shows the first rows in full and the rest as date and amount. Signing in free with Google shows every row and unlocks the download, and the free plan covers up to 5 statement pages a month.
Where to download your Citi statement as a PDF
You need the PDF of the statement, not a screenshot or a transaction export. In Citi online banking or the Citi Mobile app, open the account's statements area and download the PDF for the period. Labels vary by account and change over time, so this is the general flow rather than exact menu names:
- Sign in to online banking or the app and open the account (checking, savings or credit card).
- Open the account's statements area.
- Choose the statement period you want.
- Download the PDF, or share it from the app.
If you are collecting a full year, download each monthly statement separately. Paid plans can take up to 12 statements in one upload.
What a Citi statement looks like
Layouts vary by account type and change over time, so this is a general picture rather than an exact specification. Knowing roughly what is on the page helps you check the converted file.
Citi credit card statements usually include:
- An account summary: previous balance, payments, credits, purchases, cash advances, fees, interest and the new balance.
- A payment information box with the minimum payment and due date.
- A transactions area, often split into sections such as payments and credits, standard purchases, fees charged and interest charged.
- Rows that often show two dates, a sale date and a post date, plus a description and an amount.
Citi checking and savings statements usually include:
- A header with the statement period and a masked account number.
- A summary of balances. Some Citi statements combine several linked accounts, such as checking and savings, in one PDF with a summary across all of them.
- An activity table per account with a date, a description, amounts for money taken out and money added, and a running balance.
The parts that trip up generic PDF-to-Excel tools are the same here as elsewhere: summary lines read as transactions, wrapped descriptions split into two rows, section subtotals mixed in with real activity, and tables that continue across pages.
What you get in the Excel file
The converter reads the transactions themselves, not just any table on the page, and lays them out in consistent columns:
| Column | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Date (DD/MM/YYYY) | The transaction date |
| Description | The merchant or transaction text |
| Amount | A signed amount |
| Balance | The running balance, when the statement prints one |
| Source File | The PDF the row came from |
| Page | The page the row came from |
A few Citi-specific points:
- Card statements have no running balance per row, so the Balance column is usually empty for them. That is expected.
- Signs follow the statement type. On checking and savings, money out is negative and money in is positive. On a credit card, purchases, fees and interest are positive, and payments and credits are negative.
- One Date column. Where a card statement prints both a sale date and a post date, comparing a few rows with the PDF shows which printed date was taken. That matters most around month-end cutoffs.
- Combined statements. If your PDF covers several linked accounts, check in the preview that the activity from each account is there, and use the Page column to trace any row back to its section.
Converting your Citi statement with statementconvert.ai
statementconvert.ai reads Citi checking, savings and credit card statements, from digital PDFs and, often, from scans.
- Upload your Citi PDF.
- Preview the rows. Transactions are read by AI, which can make mistakes, so each result is checked against the balances and totals printed on the statement, where there are any, and tells you whether they matched. On a Citi card statement, the account summary (previous balance, activity and new balance) is what the rows are compared with.
- Download the format you need:
- Excel (.xlsx) for sorting, filtering, pivot tables and formulas.
- CSV for Google Sheets or for importing into accounting software yourself; there is no direct integration with QuickBooks, Xero or other tools. The guide to importing a statement CSV into QuickBooks and Xero covers the mapping.
- JSON or XML for scripts and systems.
On privacy: we never store your statement. It travels over HTTPS, is processed in memory, its pages are read by our AI providers (OpenAI, and Anthropic for a second reading), and it is then discarded. The providers do not train on it and may keep request logs for up to 30 days; the privacy page has the details. There is no bank login and no connection to your Citi account: you upload a PDF and that is all we see. (More on this: Is it safe to upload your bank statement online?)
A quick check before you use the data
- Balance result. Did the result say the rows agreed with the printed balances or totals? A match means the extracted figures agree with the balances that were checked; it does not prove every row is right, because errors can offset. A mismatch means comparing the rows with the statement to find where they differ.
- Row count. Roughly the same number of rows as transactions on the statement, with no summary lines sneaking in.
- Signs. Payments to a card come out negative; purchases positive.
- Descriptions. Long merchant names and foreign-transaction details stay on one row each.
The same statement also shows recurring charges
A Citi card statement is often where streaming, software and membership charges show up month after month. statementconvert.ai also lists recurring charges it finds in the statements you upload. For the method, see how to find all your subscriptions from a bank statement.
Prefer to do it manually?
For a clean digital Citi PDF, Excel's Power Query may help: availability depends on the Excel version and platform, and where the From PDF connector exists it can extract the tables, which usually need cleanup afterwards for the summary rows and split descriptions. Copy and paste works for a handful of lines. The full comparison of methods is in how to convert a PDF bank statement to Excel. Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a Citi statement to Excel? Download the statement as a PDF from Citi online banking or the Citi Mobile app, upload it to statementconvert.ai, preview the extracted transactions, and download as Excel, CSV, JSON or XML. It reads Citi checking and savings statements as well as Citi credit card statements, and we never store your statement.
Where do I find my Citi statement as a PDF? In Citi online banking or the Citi Mobile app, open the account's statements area and download the PDF for the period. Labels vary by account and change over time, so the exact wording on screen may differ.
Does it work with Citi credit card statements? Yes. Citi credit card statements usually list transactions with a date, a description and an amount, grouped into sections such as payments and credits, purchases, fees and interest. The converter reads the transactions from those sections into one table; purchases come out positive and payments negative.
What if my Citi statement shows two dates per transaction? Citi card statements often print both a sale date and a post date. The export has one Date column. Comparing a few rows with the PDF shows which printed date was taken, which matters around month-end cutoffs, when a sale near the end of one period can post in the next.
